JIGSAW Classic Triumph Invitation Races Entry & Race details 2009 2008
RACE REPORT An overcast but warm morning greeted the JIGSAW Classic Triumph competitors at Mallory Park on Monday 25th May. A grid of 22 Triumphs ranging from TR2-6, Spitfire, Vitesse, Dolomite Sprint, GT6's and a Warwick.
Signing on was passed with no problems, and then off to scrutineering. For the majority of the competitors this passed without incident, but new comer, Neil Fender, in his ex works rally TR2 came in for a bit of a grilling, however Mark was on hand to assist with matters raised and Neil received his pass to enable him to compete. There was just time between scrutineering and practice for those last minute checks, and at 11.50 we were out for our 15minute practice session. Mark Campbell, TR5, was to set a tremendous pace gaining him pole position with a 52.703lap. Closely followed by Rob Cowing, TR6, Celia Stevens, Warwick, and Mike Hazlewood, TR4.
Whilst the main practice was largely uneventful, it was to find out those little problems with a number of the cars, ADU1B the 1964 Le Mans Spitfire, driven on this occasion by Ian Smythe, running a big end bearing, prompting withdrawal. Mike Hughes in his TR5, experienced clutch failure, and Neil Fender in his ex works rally TR2, had the disappointment of an oil leak onto his rear shoes from the diff, and Steve Chapman, TR4, unfortunately only managed one lap of practice but with the problem resolves was allowed to start the race from the back of the grid.
We were scheduled as Race 5 following the lunch break, so we had the chance to catch up with old friends amongst the competitors and get to know a little more about the new competitors amongst our number, including Jeremy Stafford in his GT6, Dominic Spicer in his TR4, Rob Roodhouse and Jeff Hooper in their TR6's who where having a change of scene from their usual Sprint & Hillclimb competition.
Amongst old friends on the grid, Andy Vowell with his Spitfire, put in a qualify lap that positioned him 5th on the grid, well up from fellow Spitfire competitor, Les Congdon, in his beautifully prepared Spitfire 1500. Our only Dolomite Sprint this year, driven by Mark Osborne was placed 6th, closely followed by Brian Arculus, TR3a, & David Bailey in his TR4, which he had driven from his home earlier in the day to finish his 'running in' of the engine.
The middle of the field was made up of Clive Gimson in his GR6 MkII in 9th, followed by Phillip Lambe, TR6, Edwin Driver, TR2, John Davies in his Vitesse Coupe, and to complete the field, Neil Revington in his TR5, a change this year from last year's entry car, his TRS Le Mans car.
Although we were to have a few spots of rain whilst waiting for our race to begin they came to nothing and it remained dry for our race, which was delayed due to a car from the previous race requiring removal from the back straight barriers.
At the drop of the flag our pole positioned man, Mark Campbell, lead the way into Gerrards and quickly opened up a lead on Rob Cowing and Mike Hazlewood. An inoperative alternator was to be the downfall of Mark causing a flat battery, and his subsequent retirement on lap 10. Meanwhile Steve Chapman was steadily working his way through the field from his last place start, to finish, much to his surprise in 3rd place. Throughout the race Brian Arculus kept a very persistent David Bailey behind him to finish 4th and 5th respectively. The remaining Spitfire of Andy Vowell, was to finish in 2nd place and one lap down from race winner Mike Hazlewood. Celia Stevens, in her Warwick, Mark Osborne's Dolomite and Neil Revington brought home new comers Rob Roodhouse, Jeff Hooper & Jeremy Stafford, who rounded off the 11 finishers. Unfortunately the race was to see the retirement of eight of our number due to various issues ranging from electrical problems to the lose of rear drive shafts in the case of Clive Gimson, who came to rest on the exit of Gerrard's. John Davies experienced brake lose at the hairpin, leaving his car with damage due to a nudge with the safety barrier.
With such a high attrition rate over a 30 minute race, we must concluded that 20 minutes is probably a better length race for the Classic Triumphs and their drivers. A format which we would hope to return to should we be able to host another race in the future.
It was a real honour to once again host such an enjoyable race, with a wide variety of racing Triumph's, and our thanks go to all who supported us and competed on the day, and we would also like to thank the CSCC for their help and assistance in the holding of this race.

2009 introduction With the success of our first race last May, held at Mallory Park, with the help and assistance of the Classic Sports Car Club, we have decided to hold a similar race this year.
To be held again at Mallory Park as part of the Classic Sports Car race weekend, the race this year will be a 30 minute pit-stop race. We are once again hoping to get a wide range and variety of Triumph or Triumph engined cars, including once again some of the Le Mans entrants from 2008.
We do hope that you will be able to come along and support your fellow Triumph enthusiasts.
You may wish to make it a full weekend of Triumph events by attending the Standard Triumph Marque day at Duxford the day before and then coming along to our race.

BACKGROUND into the race The race has been brought about through Mark and Jo's interest in Truimphs', and a wish to bring together a wide range and diversity of historic, classic and interesting racing cars combined with club racing cars, to hopefully put together one of the largest grids of Triumph's that has been seen for many years. With the view of offering a good value, high standard and gentlemanly race, within the realms of historic and classic motor sport, that is interesting for both the individual competitor and the spectators alike.
