An extract from

'With great disappointment for all, Chris & Sean have needed to withdraw the Triumph 2500 from the rally after sustaining substantial damaged after being rear-ended by car #14 on day 1.

Greatest commiserations to Chris, but most importantly hearty congratulations and praise on the huge effort made by him, the trustees, and the mechanics for this amazing fund raising event'

Day One of the London to Cape Town Rally

Brooklands, Parliament Square and Kent stages

Competitors gather at Brooklands for scrutineering checks, final driver briefings and a general get together before the long run to Cape Town

Chris Butcher and Sean Moriarty get ready to leave Brooklands for Parliament Square

A wet and windy Parliament Square before the 7pm start

Having been flagged off from Parliament Square to make their way to Dover via the night stages, it is with regret that we have to report that after check point 16 Chris & Sean were involved in an incident that would mean they could not continue further with the rally.

Unfortunately a slippery left hand corner saw them slide wide onto the verge, sustaining on slight cosmetic damage.  Another competitor stopped to check that both Chris and Sean were okay, but a third vehicle ploughed into the rear of the car, pushing the car further onto the ditch and a tree, causing substantial damage to the front passenger side including steering and suspension, together with the boot and fuel tanks.

The damage sustained was to prove too great to be rectified either at the scene or at the night stop hotel in Dover and later that night the car was recovered back to our workshops in Corby.  Further inspection of the car showed the extent of the damage to both the front and rear of the car.  Even the 'big hammer', as suggested by one contributor on Club Triumph's forum, would prove not to be capable of the job at this point in time.

This is indeed a very sad turn of events for all of us, but we can report that although bruised, Chris and Sean are okay, and the car is repairable but not in time for this event.  However, once repaired, Chris hopes to compete in various events and may even consider the Paris to Peking in 2013.
